CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

SUT

Crouching in the tall grass by the side of the road, Penelope watched the queer, roly-poly creatures shackle her two companions and march them in the direction of the village. Long after they disappeared, the girl remained in her hiding spot, sobbing and growing more frightened by the minute.

“What am I going to do?” she cried. Finally, after an hour of pulling her hair and biting her perfectly manicured nails down to the cuticles, it dawned on the girl that she had better think of something, fast. “But what?” she muttered. “I can wait here and hope that nasty Druid person shows up, which might be never, or I can go back and look for Muffy and the others. But what if I can’t find them? What if they’re all dead and those horrible beasts are still around?” The only other course open to her was to rescue Miranda and Arabella. The big question was, how?

Then she remembered how Stubby, her homeroom teacher, had bought the Muffy story without blinking. If anyone had told her that the expensive gifts her parents showered upon the teacher made it easier for him to believe the wild story, she would have laughed. No! It was her cleverness alone that had earned her extra time to complete the assignment.

Penelope racked her brain, discarding one idea after another. She thought about the Simurghs. Who or what was Sut? The Simurghs had said that Sut would deal with the prisoners, so whatever sort of creature it was, it must be important. For a minute, the girl stared off into the distance. Suddenly a light flickered on in her head. “Yes! It just might work!” she cried, leaping to her feet and stomping purposefully toward the village.
